History

The club can trace its origins to an inaugural meeting on the 24th April, 1907, when an enthusiastic and determined group of residents interested in forming a golf club in Busselton held a meeting at the Esplanade Hotel.

At the time golf was becoming more and more popular for people living in the metropolitan area and it was thought that building a golf course in Busselton would attract more holiday makers to the area.

At the end of the meeting, it was unanimously decided that Busselton should get its own golf club.  From day one, those involved have never been sort to mess around and 31 days later the official opening of the club took place on the 25th May, a Wednesday afternoon.

Play was on a 9-hole course laid out on both sides of Causeway Road and fronting the Vasse River.  Between 1914 and 1928 records were sparce and archives suggest there may have been various temporary courses in that time.

A new Fairlawn Course opened in 1928 (in vicinity of southern Strelley Street, in the light industrial area) before the club moved again, in 1940, to McGregors Paddock (near the drive-in cinema).

From 1948 to 1978 the “Old Course” in Sussex Green was the Club’s home.  The clubhouse was recognised as the West Busselton Tavern and the course was a little gem.  But it stood in the way of urban development and, after considerable investigation, the Club accepted a favourable offer to move to its existing Ambergate Course.

Built to international standards, it came complete with a Clubhouse, practice range, caretaker’s cottage, two squash courts and sizeable additional monetary compensation.

Since 1979 our current course has matured and has become recognised as one of the best in rural Western Australia. The process of improvement continues with a new irrigation system installed in 2001 and the use of recycled water to irrigate the course.
